Why Licking Is Calming for Dogs and Cats

Licking is one of the simplest self-soothing behaviors a dog or cat has. It releases endorphins, slows the heart rate, and gives an anxious pet something repetitive and predictable to focus on, the same reason humans reach for a stress ball or a cup of tea.

A lick mat works with this instinct instead of against it. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter, plain yogurt, or wet food across the textured surface, and a meal that would normally take ninety seconds stretches into ten or fifteen minutes of steady, calm licking.

When a lick mat helps most

  • Before nail trims, baths, or vet visits, to settle nerves beforehand
  • During thunderstorms or fireworks, as a distraction that also soothes
  • At mealtimes, to slow down a pet who eats too fast
  • During longer alone-time stretches, to ease separation stress

It is a small, inexpensive habit that does a lot of quiet work. Our Enrichment & Play collection has a few options if you want to try it.
