Dogs and cats who gulp their food are not being greedy, they are following instinct. In the wild, fast eating meant less chance of losing a meal to competition. In a home with a full bowl and no competitors, that instinct just causes gulping, gas, and sometimes vomiting shortly after eating.
What actually helps
A slow feeder works by adding texture, ridges, or raised patterns to the bottom of the bowl, so your pet has to work around obstacles instead of inhaling everything in one go. A lick mat does something similar by spreading food thin across a wide surface.
- Reduces the risk of bloat in deep-chested dog breeds
- Cuts down on post-meal vomiting from eating too fast
- Turns a 90-second meal into 10 to 15 minutes of engagement
- Works for both wet and dry food, with some adjustment
If your pet finishes meals in under a minute, it is worth trying one for a week before assuming it is just their personality. See our Feeding & Hydration collection for a few options.
